The term “sheet metal” refers to any metal that can be formed into flat pieces of varying thicknesses. Thick metals are called plate. Metals used in the sheet metal industry include cold rolled steel, mild steel, stainless steel, tin, nickel, titanium, aluminum, brass, and copper.

Using specialized tools, sheet metal workers cut, roll, bend, and shape these pieces to make a wide variety of objects. Examples of where sheet metal can be found or used include:
- Refrigeration unit cabinets
- Medical tables and storage units

- Exhaust hoods
- Decorative art
What is the average hourly rate of a Commercial Apprentice?
$19.27 – $34.26, plus benefits: 401(K), Local Pension, National Pension, Health & Welfare, Apprentice/Journeyman Training, National Industry Fund, SMOI, NEMI.
What do I need to bring with me to apply?
Birth Certificate (must be at least 18 years of age), proof of high school graduation or GED, college transcripts (if applicable), and a valid driver’s license (must be a Nevada driver’s license prior to acceptance into the program).

Do I need all the documents at the time I apply, or can I bring them later?
You have to bring photo copies of all your documents with you, with no exceptions, or you will not be given an application.
When do I apply?
On the first Tuesday of every month, between 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., or 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
When does the program start?
We begin our first year classes every July 1st.
What if I have not yet finished high school?
You must have a high school diploma or GED in order to apply for the program.
What if I was not born in this country?
You still need a copy of all your documents. If written in a language other than English, it should be translated.
What are the age requirements?
You must be at least 18 years old. There is no upper age limit.
What if I want to just work as a helper?
You can apply as a pre-apprentice at our Union Hall, located at 2560 Marco St. You need to be at least 18 years old, and have a valid Nevada driver’s license.
Do I have to be a pre-apprentice to be able to get into the apprenticeship program?
No, but if you are a pre-apprentice, it will count for points towards your math and reading test.
How long is the program?
It is a four-year program.
How do I earn while I learn?
You work full-time, during the day, for a contractor, and receive a regular paycheck. You also attend school once or twice a week. As a first-year student, your classes are during the day. Later, the classes are after work in the evening.
Do I need any experience?
No previous sheet metal experience is necessary.
What if I am out of town and can't come in to apply?
Applicants must apply in person for the apprenticeship.
What happens after I apply?
You will need to return, at a later date, to take a math and reading test. Upon passing the test, you will return again for an interview.
How long does it take to get into the program?
The length of time varies, depending on what time of year you apply.
What if I don't pass the test?
You will receive a letter from our office if you do not pass the test. You may then come in, on the first Tuesday of any future month, and reapply. You will need to bring all of your documents at that time.
Do I need original documents when I come in?
You need your original driver’s license, but copies of the other documents are acceptable.
